Words and definitions thereof matter.
Language matters.
Remember "newspeak" in George Orwell's book "1984".
It seems like a casual mistake. It's so casually uttered that after awhile it makes you just want to just let it go. But if you know what the distinctions are between a democracy and a representative republic, then you are unable to inaccurately speak about our government. And so often it is said by people, important people, who should or do know better.
