Krampus Origin: The Story Behind His Bag of Children | Tartaria Britannica

The true Krampus origin—before he walked with the saint, he came alone and the sack on his back wasn’t empty.

It was for children he took.

In the earliest surviving tellings, Krampus didn’t just frighten misbehaving children or give a symbolic switch. He threatened to abduct them. He was said to carry the worst offenders in his sack, basket, or pannier, sometimes to be taken into the mountains, sometimes to be drowned, and in some regional tales, to be eaten.

This wasn’t metaphor. It was how the story was told.

Parents didn’t soften the details. Winter wasn’t a season of comfort. It was a season that demanded attention.
