By Christmas 1776, the revolution was collapsing. The army was unpaid, freezing, and deserting. Enlistments were expiring, Congress had fled and many believed the cause was lost.

It was then that George Washington against overwhelming odds, made a final gamble. On Christmas night, he led his exhausted men across the ice-choked Delaware River and launched a surprise attack at Trenton the following morning. It wasn’t a grand victory, but it was enough to revive belief and keep the revolution alive.

So when Trump invokes 1776 and does so at Christmas, he’s pointing to the moment when perseverance, not power, saved the republic.

He’s reminding us that nations are reborn when they refuse to surrender. That the hardest moments precede the turning point and that endurance, not comfort, is what saves a republic
