One should never hesitate to stop an intruder's threat cold... ASSUME THEY ARE ALL ARMED, because that fraction of a second of hesitation, especially in such close quarters, could allow the attacker to bring their weapon to bear, whatever it is, and then one finds themselves lying there immobilized while watching the attacker do terrible, horrific things to loved ones. That would be worse than death.
So in my world, they cross that door or window threshold or even brandish a weapon outside, it's game over for them.
Someone with a knife can kill in less than 1 second, especially in close quarters.
Here is a case of a Police Officer who hesitated and was nearly killed by a knife attacker even though his gun was drawn. He hesitated.
