The term "anti-Semitic" was coined in 1879 by German journalist Wilhelm Marr to describe hostility toward Jews, replacing earlier terms like "Jew-hatred."

He used it in a pamphlet to frame his prejudice as a modern, racial concept rather than a religious one.
