Actually IMO it was the angels, to keep the demons and the humans that didn't listen to Noah's warnings from God, from climbing out of the flood waters.They settled to the bottom of the oceans and their decaying and calcified remains formed the land that arose from the land when the waters receded.

According to the Bible when an animal dies it's soul returns to the earth. But when a man dies his soul returns to God. The book of Enoch says that the Nephilim being a hybrid born from the unholy union between and Angel and a woman is different. When they die their soul doesn't return to the earth. And doesn't return to the GOD. Their souls wander the earth as demons.
