The firing angle could have been high enough the bullet was traveling downwards, not across to hit the guy behind.
It either passed through enough of his body to slow it or exited into the ground at Kirk's side.
It was travelling downward...impact would have smeared blood enough to be seen..exit would have taken way more blood a further distance and bloodied his shirt in the front and side... splatter pattern is totally missing... unless a titanium bullet was used
