General MacArthur saved countless lives on all sides in how he ran his Campaign in the Pacific.
Not only was he a Brilliant Military Strategist, he also was Brilliant in how he understood Asian Cultures and especially the People of Japan.
Many factions (I believe Curtis Lemay was one) wanted to PUNISH the Japanese terribly for being the Aggressors in WW2, but General MacArthur knew better. Japan could have fallen into civil war as WW2 ended, causing tons more bloodshed, but what MacArthur did was Subdue the Japanese Militarists while SHOWING RESPECT FOR THE JAPANESE PEOPLE & CULTURE.
MacArthur also knew he has to bring Japan's Emperor Hirohito gracefully but sternly down out of the Clouds so everyone could see him at eye-level.
