To understand a problem that was cropping up in physics at the end of the nineteenth century, it is necessary to explain something about the colors we see. If you have on a red shirt, all the colors are being absorbed by that shirt except red, which is rejected, and so is what you see. In other words, the colors you see on objects are the colors the object 'doesn't want.' White bounces everything back and black absorbs everything. Well, that was the theory. Until the problem of black body radiation came up. Why did an absolutely black thing still radiate some kind of energy?
