Two people from my circle recently traveled for three weeks through a small part of China, visiting traditional monasteries and grottoes, as well as colorful, vibrant, modern cities. They made a two-hour video about their trip because they were so enthusiastic. The people there are better off than us in the West, and they are proud of their country. China has surpassed us by decades, and their children's education is a top priority. Perhaps you're thinking of China decades ago. Today, thanks to their own Electric cars it's very clean.

Yes there is/was a growing middle class in China, but the disparity in wealth of the few is far from the situation of the working masses in China who toil in the mines, the factories, in the farms, in the steel plants, and on the streets of their massive cities. Tourists never see that. That is what Xi has to address and I believe that will soon change in China.
In China those working for less than $1 per day in 2016 numbered over 900 million. Factories were already shutting down then in China.
