Most people think Don Imus was fired by MSNBC and his empire crashed down because of "racist" comments about the Rutgers women's basketball team.
Did he refer to them as "nappy-headed hoes?" Yes. The Imus show had that kind of "humor" for years. That's what "Shock Jocks" were all about. But he never faced any serious repercussions until the Rutgers incident.
But that April 2007 incident was used to launch a smear campaign and remove him from the airwaves. But that incident isn't what really prompted the cancellation.
Imus gave his wife Deirdre the platform to discuss daily her concerns of thimerosal's mercury in vaccines causing autism in children. Every day she came on and raised these questions.
Big Pharma, which advertises heavily on MSNBC, did not like this daily reminder, as there were profits to be made. So he was fired. Not because MSNBC suddenly was concerned about "racism," a topic it only uses as a weapon.
