I have been thinking about this. Surely some of these judges are aware that their behavior is against the law. My idea is that this flouting of the laws could provide an out for anyone who might have enabled (accepted a bribe to look the other way as an example) any bad actors that are about to come to light. Rather than further undermine confidence in the judicial system, this could allow individuals to take themselves out and hopefully there is a suitable replacement in the wings.
