The Origins of Wordle and the Birth of Wordle Unlimited

Wordle was created in 2021 by software engineer Josh Wardle as a gift for his partner, who loved word games. The game offered a single five-letter word puzzle each day, challenging players to guess the word in six attempts. Each guess provided feedback: green for the correct letter in the correct position, yellow for the correct letter in the wrong position, and gray for incorrect letters.

Its simplicity, social media shareability, and clever design led to an explosion in popularity. Soon after, The New York Times acquired Wordle, integrating it into its suite of puzzle games. However, one of the most common criticisms of the official version was its limitation: players had to wait until the next day for a new challenge.

This limitation gave rise to Wordle Unlimited, a free-to-play web-based version that allowed for infinite puzzles.
