The bible actually says that pilate put the decision in the hands of the Jews. In the KJ version Matthew 27: 17--25. At verse 24 Pilate says," I am innocent of the blood of this hust person: see ye to it." So he washed his hands of it and left it up to the chief priests and elders.
Strange but I recall being taught that Pilate did not want to crucify Jesus but the Jewish Sanhedrin forced his hand. I don't really see any great mystery here at all.
