Gear Reducers: An Overview of Their Working and Applications

A gear reducer, also known as a speed reducer or a gearbox, is a mechanical device that is used to reduce the rotational speed of a drive shaft while increasing the torque. This article will provide an overview of how gear reducers work and discuss some common applications where they are utilized.

For example, if a drive gear has 20 teeth and is meshed with a driven gear that has 40 teeth, the driven gear will complete only half a rotation for each full rotation of the drive gear. This proportional relationship between the gear ratios allows gear reducers to achieve high gear reduction ratios in a step-by-step manner using multiple gear stages. Planetary gearboxes are also commonly used as they can achieve high gear reductions in a compact design.
