Then why can I focus in on the moon with my 35mm telephoto lens? The mountains are only 40 miles from me, and I cannot focus in on them as good as I can the moon.
The moon is probably closer than 40 miles from the earth's surface.

Yeah, my guess would be just about 32-33 miles away. Knowing how they like 33, maybe leaning just a little towards 33 miles.
