An extension does not work because you have to pay what’s owed by April 15 even if you file much later in October. They don’t let what you owe slide. People keep saying file an extension but it just doesn’t work that way.

We got an extension almost every year and sometimes, we extended the extension for another three months.
I'm in a blue state, but since it is federal income tax, the rules should be the same.
We still had to pay when the extension expired, but we avoided late fees by getting the extensions.

That means we have been scammed by our accountant who told us we would be fined if the payment wasn’t made now. Today DOGE announced thousands of IRS layoffs. How can they even do tax season without people?

Originally our accountant suggested an extension which is why I talked about this.
I just asked my daughter, who got an extension last year,
She couldn't remember if she was penalized, but then said she may have paid a fee, but it was not a big deal.
So now, I don't know for sure because it was years ago when we needed the extensions.
It might be good to ask an expert
