Who is the Kumari?
The Kumari is a young girl, usually between the ages of 3 and 5, who is believed to be the incarnation of the Hindu goddess Taleju (a form of Durga). She is chosen from the Buddhist Shakya clan, even though the goddess she represents is Hindu. This shows how religions can blend together in Nepal.
How is She Chosen?
The selection process is very special and detailed. Priests look for specific qualities in a potential Kumari. She must be healthy, have no scars or blemishes, and meet a long list of 32 physical perfections, this may sound a little bit strict but it is what it is. It is their tradition and culture, and we should respect that.
