1/2 The Parable of the Rich Man

In the Gospel of Luke (16:19-31), Jesus tells the parable of a wealthy man who lived a life of luxury, feasting sumptuously every day, while a poor beggar named Lazarus lay at his gate, covered in sores and longing to eat the scraps from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs would come and lick Lazarus’s sores.

Death and Afterlife

When both men died, Lazarus was carried away by angels to the bosom of Abraham, while the rich man was buried. In Hades (Hell), the rich man looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. He pleaded with Abraham to send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool his tongue, as he was in agony in the fire.

Abraham’s Response

Abraham replied, “Child, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and Lazarus likewise bad things, but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish. Besides all this, a great chasm has been fixed between us, so that those who want to cross over from here to you cannot do so, and no one can cross from there to us.”

The Rich Man’s Request

The rich man then asked Abraham to send Lazarus to his father’s house (where he had five brothers) to warn them so that they wouldn’t come to the same place of torment. Abraham responded, “They have Moses and the prophets; they must respond to them.” The rich man persisted, “No, father Abraham, but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.” Abraham’s final answer was, “If they do not listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.”
