Five months ago, Piedmont Lithium made headlines as it moved closer to launching its mining operation in Gaston County, North Carolina, after securing a state-approved mining permit just two and a half years after applying.
However, local residents had been fighting against the proposed lithium mine for years, with residents describing themselves as a "silent minority."
Their main concern: the environmental damage the mine could bring, feeling it wasn’t in their best interest.
Several homes in the area even displayed yard signs with bold "No" symbols over the words "Gaston County pit mine."
🚨Fast forward five months, and Hurricane Helene has left the community reeling in apocalyptic conditions.
