Lots of mountains in E-TN/W-NC with rivers, lakes and creeks. Plus, it rained for a couple of days before Helene even got here. There is a tremendous amount of water draining downhill toward those bodies of water, overwhelming their banks. It's washed roads & bridges out the way hurricane storm surge does on the coast. The power of water is frighteningly awe-inspiring.
