My growing potatoes this year, didn't amount to much in a container pot. however, next year I hope to have some raised beds if all goes well with pallet collecting and bin making. I actually got 4 tiny little thumb sized potatoes. Although I must admit, they were from the farmers potato crop this spring. But all an adventure and learning is fun!

Need to get seed potatoes
Store bought have sprout nip sprayed on them to keep the eyes from turning to sprouts

You can get results from store bought ones if you place them in a dark cool place with a few onions.

The gas onions give off causes potatoes to sprout.
You may notice if onions and potatoes are stored together
The potatoes develop eyes and sprouts quickly

For long term storage
Keep them stored in separate areas or your potatoes won't make the winter

They'll have eyes a foot long and be shriveled up

And is there a way to make this spray for the eyes ourselves?

I installed a new packaging line in a "little potato" processing facility just over a year ago.
We could not use certain types of conveyor belting as the sprout nip erodes the belting material.
I no longer but or eat little potatoes as a result.
Grew up, growing our own.
Do so if you can
Potatoes use alot of potassium from soil so it is good to either add it the next year or rotate to new soil.
The scabs, or brown spots you find on potatoes is usually a result of lack of potassium.
Potash is your best bet
It contains alot of salt as well, so makes acidic soil basic

Are thumb sized little ones worth trying to save all winter for seed potatoes next year? These were just an experiment this year with planting the farmers potatoes in a container.

TY for your expertise! I am still very much learning!

If you can sprout them.
They'll grow.
Onions are a great kicker to find out quickly.
You'll know in a week
