At 4 km deep, the Mponeng Mine near Johannesburg holds the Guinness World Record as the world's deepest gold mine.

Its walls are over 60Β°C and humidity is often above 95%.

More than 6,000 tons of ice slurry are pumped into underground reservoirs, giant fans circulate the cooled air in the mine.

About 5,000 pounds of explosives are used and 6,400 tons of rock are mined every day."
