I know that my grandfather gave safe passage to many Russians, including Jews, to the world, in 1939-1945. Our 60 ships went all over the world from Finland, Finland's export was hardwood, hardwood for structures (missile/plane skins/skeletons) and paper (duh). Most of the ships had enough state rooms to take 2-3 families if they were ok with sleeping on the floor space. Dogs and cats stayed below with the crew. All, were fed well.
