The Cubans were also the first social experiment of a response to PEAK OIL event. They turned car trunks into urban gardens and grew food everywhere they could. Deployed bicycles, donkeys and carts throughout the land.
Of course they had to be saved by their Venezuelan Komrads that restarted the oil supply.
A potential success story in the absence of imported oil was a bit too risky, I suppose.
