SATURDAY, you know there's a lot going on in the world right now, but I just had to write about what's happening with our banks.
High interest rates and chaos in the real estate industry are putting enormous pressure on our largest financial institutions. As a result, banks are becoming very cash-strapped, closing hundreds of branches and laying off thousands of workers. We are in the early stages of the worst financial crisis since 2008 and 2009 and I expect conditions to worsen in the coming months. Major U.S. banks continue to close branches across the U.S., leaving more Americans without access to even basic financial services.
Bank of America closed 21 branches during the first week of October, according to a bulletin released Friday by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC).
