One thing that astounds me - is in my area, not sure if it is everywhere (I'm in the PNW) people are cutting down their fruit trees because they don't want to deal with all the fruit!!!!!!!! These trees are huge, very old (some over 100 years old) and are varieties not really seen anymore. But because they don't want to 'deal with the fruit' and just want to buy a few apples or plums or whatever at the store each week...they cut the trees down 😱

I ask on FB marketplace for the fruit, if anyone will let me come pick their trees. And I have all the apples I want 💖

But no one has any idea how to preserve their fruit, why, and they only see it as an inconvenience. Me...I'm on 1.5 acres of mostly redwood and spruce and a little tiny bit of growing space. I can't grow much here. If I only had more land...I would end up growing enough for dozens of families, it's what I do 😍

That's great Laurie. A friend of mine has a neighbor who let's her pick all the apples she wants. That's where I got my apples to can. It's unthinkable to cut down these trees. Those people are ignorant.

Yes, people will need the skills. If if ever gets to that point, dehydrating in the sun and smoking will be the way to preserve as jar lids will be gone (even the reusable Tattler lids will wear out the rubber rings). Foraging, etc.

I homestead and we grow/raise about half our food, and store it (big time prepper). I'm a former nurse and now an herbalist, and I forage.

I'm trying to give classes in my local area, small rural area but no one but the really old ladies know any of this. I taught a class on how to make salt from our local ocean water - only 9 people showed up and they were blown away just with the concept, they thought you had to buy it in a box or plastic container, LOL!

Sadly, although there is a ton of interest - not many actually take a few hours once a month to learn a new skill. Some of the classes are even free...like the saltmaking class.

I'm teaching how to pressure can meat this month, we'll see if more people show up...

What state do you live in? If I were in your vicinity, I would certainly join your classes. I have a friend well-versed in identifying beneficial properties of various "weeds." It's remarkable how abundant information exists that we remain unaware of. Your dedication is commendable. As people increasingly recognize the value of these skills and gain a deeper understanding, there will likely be a surge in demand for learning such valuable knowledge. Keep up the excellent work!
