It is a circle on the back of the camera but the film is a strip which is exposed through a rectangular aperture (to make maximum use of the expensive film). Digital cameras are designed to mimic what we are familiar with; just like they make completely unnecessary click-whir sounds.
There is no mystery or plot here.
