I do not think people were as primitive as we were told; rather, they were more oppressed than they are even now when it seems very bad. Information (printing press, newspapers, internet) has helped connect people to fight back. What was meant for bad (control) turned to good. Yes, censorship is very bad, but look how many people have gone under, above, and around.
