"Soft Martial Law Begins in Mexico"
Mexican Army To Control Airports In Corruption Fight
Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has instructed the army to take control of the capital’s main airport and plans to do the same at a dozen more airports nationwide to combat corruption.
The Navy took charge of security at Mexico City International Airport over a year ago but will now control everything from baggage handling and customs to cleaning toilets to crack down on illegal migration, drug trafficking, stolen luggage, and corrupt contracts.
Airport director Rear Adm. Carlos Velázquez Tiscareño claimed six other airports are “in the hands of organized crime” and will be run by a company set up by the navy.
