Ties between Lifespan, Chinese hospital give R.I. an edge in coronavirus battle

PROVIDENCE — An international relationship that began in 2016 when Lifespan leaders partnered with colleagues at Union Hospital in Wuhan, China, has given Rhode Island an edge in the fight against coronavirus disease.

Four years ago, of course, no one could have predicted the COVID-19 pandemic. No one could have foreseen that the killer virus would cross from animals to people in Wuhan — or that Wuhan would be the first epicenter of the disease.

But that happened. Now, with more than 236,000 cases, by far most in the world, America is the global hot zone. With a third of that number of cases (and 3,322 deaths, compared to 5,648 in the United States), China appears to have turned the corner, making the expertise of doctors and nurses
