๐ In our semi rural neighborhood, early 70's, we as kids all had a horse or 2 in our backyard acreages. We'd pack some PB&J sandwiches, & apples for the horses in a plastic bag, climb on the horses bareback using a fence post to get high enough(no saddle - they were too heavy for us to lift) gather like a posse in one of the parents driveway, & head towards the ridge of mountains, or favorite swimming holes. The sandwiches were smushed by the time we got around to eating them. Lol.
We never told our parents which direction we were going.
No cell phones
No walkie talkies
No communication
No emergency supplies
The horses would let us know if there were bears or cougars nearby.
When I think about some of the things we did, we kept our guardian angels on their toes for sure, and those horses had the patience of saints, babysitting rascally kids. Lol
Search & rescue would have a hell of time finding us, or even get to where we went
The only rule was, we had to be back home

Bingo. We had to be back inside before dark to eat dinner, which couldโve been liver and onions, even if you didnโt like it! We had two choicesโฆ. 1. Go hungry 2. Cover in ketchup.
๐๐ Exactly!
My mom loved her liver and onions!!
