The ones who were left in Winter 1776 were kids.
15, 16, 17 years old.
A lot don't have shoes.
People are discouraged.
Troops sneaking away & going home.
The Brits are laughing in their warm huts.
In this moment, Washington has a bold plan.
With 4 days till Christmas
he tells his Generals his plan:
To cross the Delaware under cover of darkness
with all 2,000 Troops in one night
in a handful of boats β€” 'Durham' Boats.
It’s sleeting. Below freezing every night.
Everything is icing over.
The Delaware has chunks of ice floating down it.
The enemy has spies.
Very risky. Very perilous.
At a certain point though
Washington wanted his Troops all on one side β€”

πŸ™This literally left me with tears in my eyes thinking of my great grandfather(10x removed), Elijah age 16 & his brother age 15 Caleb who fought 3 yrs in the revolutionary war. Yes just kids to us, but patriots & adults back then. They were at Washington's camp at Valley Forge during that winter, I have the documents. My great grandfather had injured his foot & was a the Yallow (Yellow) hospital there. Now it's my(our) turn

What an EXTRAORDINARY history, Mare,

It is quite uncanny isn't it that they were there then & now I am here in this fight? I do believe they are alongside of us & watching over me even though I never really knew them, only in spirit. It all makes so much sense now & their sacrifices means so much more to me now than ever. What they had to endure in the 3 battles they fought in with just a musket & so young! While 15 & 16 year olds today worry about whether they are getting a car for Christmas. Anyway, thanks for posting this. A great reminder of our history & what was fought for & what we are now fighting for again!
