Peru declares state of emergency while ousted leader remains in jail.

Peru has declared a countrywide state of emergency following violent protests against the ousting of former President Pedro Castillo that left seven people dead.

The announcement came as a judge ordered Castillo to remain in jail, on charges of rebellion and conspiracy, for another 48 hours before a hearing on his release. Castillo's arrest last week after attempting to dissolve Congress and rule by decree sparked days of protests across the country that quickly escalated into violence.
