Vatican launches probe into French cardinal over abuse case

The cardinal admitted to committing a "reprehensible" act on a 14-year-old. An independent commission said that French clergy had abused 330,000 children over 70 years.

The cardinal admitted to committing a "reprehensible" act of sexual abuse on a 14-year-old.
"In order to properly examine what happened, it has been decided to open a preliminary inquiry," Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said.
Bruni said that the Vatican was looking for a person "with the necessary autonomy, impartiality and experience."

On Monday, France's Catholic Church revealed that 11 former or serving French bishops have been accused of abuse or not reporting abuse cases.

Not defending the church but that 330,000 is way off.

"The independent commission on sexual abuse set up by the French Catholic Church estimates that at least 3,000 people have been victimized by abusive priests since the 1950s. The real number could be closer to 10,000 according to other sources."
