The Templars are a secret society. Though “Officially” disbanded.
Originally they were tasked as emissaries of the Pope. Used the Red Cross as a symbol. Note White Pope.

it says the majority were non combatant members.

however we know the Freemasonry has ties to the Templars as they were an extension of the Black pope or the Jesuits.
