Instead it could be called something like Chirp instead of Twitter and messages are Chirps instead of tweets.

When 1 million people quit something over 3 months, it's not big deal BUT, when 1/2 a million people quit something on the same day, that SPEAKS VOLUMES. It gets BIG ATTENTION!
It's like triage, someone bleeding out from 1,000 cuts isn't as vital as 1 gushing blood from one massive wound.
They'll shut down the site to avoid losing more people. Imagine 70 million users cancelling Amazon subscriptions all on the same day.
